The Dynamic Marketing Communiqué

You’ve identified your readers, but do you understand them? Here’s how you can do just that! [Wednesday: Write with the Pen of the Masters]

Knowing your target audience is the most important aspect of any attention-grabbing or high-converting copy.

You see, you cannot grab the attention of your target readers if the content or write-ups you craft aren’t relatable or do not resonate with them.

That’s why in our “Write with the Pen of the Masters” articles, we often talk about the importance of this crucial aspect of writing.

With that in mind, how exactly can you learn about your audience?

As with any writing project or content marketing endeavor, the first step you need to take is to identify who your target audience is in the first place.

By identifying who your target readers are, you’ll have a clearer idea of what it is you need to know about them.

With your target readers identified, you can start learning about them by understanding what their pain points are, what they struggle with, what their unmet needs are, and how they communicate and what words they use.

To learn all of those things, here’s what you can do:

  • Go to where your readers are.

    Not literally, of course.

These days, you can go to where your target is simply by visiting social media platforms like Facebook, X (formerly known as Twitter), Threads, TikTok, YouTube, LinkedIn, Discord, and forums such as Reddit and question-and-answer websites like Quora.

Once there, start by searching for communities and posts related to your audience and your niche.

Since these digital places tend to be filled with users interacting with each other through comments, you can find out what your readers often struggle with, what their unmet needs or desires are, and what words they use in expressing themselves.

From those pieces of information, not only can you map out the content you’ll craft, but you can also identify which keywords you’ll use to make your content more relatable.

Aside from social media platforms, you can learn about your audience through publishing platforms like Substack and Medium.

While these platforms are often associated with independent media, these websites allow users to publish write-ups, essays, thought pieces, and newsletters, and other forms of content on a variety of topics or niches.

Just like their social media counterparts, users can respond to posts, making these publishing platforms a goldmine for learning about your audience.

  • Interact with your audience directly.

If you want to take a more active role in learning about your target readers, you may do so by engaging with them.

You can learn more about your target readers by interacting with them directly through email campaigns, social media posts, polls, surveys, and the like.

Interacting with your audience through these methods doesn’t just let you learn more but also gives you more visibility.

Regardless of which route you choose, what’s important here is you get to learn more about your target audiences.

If you want to take a more active approach, interact with your readers directly, especially if your brand or the brand you’re working with is already established in its own niche or market.

Should you prefer a more passive strategy, you can go to where your audiences are to learn more about them.

… or why not use a combination of both methods?

Whatever you decide, just remember that the point of doing all this is to put yourself in a position where you can know more about your readers.

After all, the more you learn about them, the better off you are in crafting killer copies!
