Writing great content in today’s AI-saturated and search engine optimization (SEO)-optimized digital landscape can often feel like a daunting task.
More often than not, write-ups are crafted with following the best practices associated with AI and SEO in mind, resulting in a process where writers feel like they are at the mercy of algorithms and have no freedom at all to come up with great content on their own.
This sentiment is valid. After all, how can writers like you not feel this way, especially since marketers and business owners have pushed for AI-leveraged and SEO-optimized copies for years?
While the push towards the creation of copies and website content is valid and backed by data, there are still other ways for you to create great content.
Sometimes, the best way to create killer copies and content is to step away from catering to algorithms.
That’s why for today’s “Write with the Pen of the Masters,” we’re going to take a deep dive into that topic!
Writing great content always begins with knowing and understanding your target audience’s needs and pain points.
Knowing such unfulfilled needs puts you in a position to create content that answers their respective pain points.
More importantly, this is a great way to maintain the relevance of your content in the eyes of your target audience.
Another way you can go about this is by analyzing what your competitors do best, especially in terms of messaging and overall content value.
This is a valuable practice because you won’t always find what your target readers need just by studying them. Sometimes, you need to understand what competitors are doing right because this will allow you to know how to deliver more value to your audience and identify gaps that you can take advantage of.
While you’re at it, why don’t you consider collaborating with subject matter experts?
One way of establishing relevance, trust, and expertise is by integrating the insights of subject matter experts into your write-ups.
According to Semrush, leveraging subject matter expert insights lend itself well to meeting Google’s experience, expertise, authoritativeness, and trustworthiness (E-E-A-T) guidelines. While this isn’t a direct factor into rankings, it is part of Google’s search quality rater guidelines that help reviewers identify which content is helpful.
Setting that aside, it’s better overall if you have a subject matter expert that backs what you have to say, since this establishes you as a valid source of information in the eyes of your readers.
Next, make sure the content you write is easy on the eyes.
Nothing turns off readers more than reading through a BIG block of text that could have been easily broken off into multiple paragraphs.
Another way of making your copies easy on the eyes is by using visuals to serve as a break between long lines of text and conveying ideas, limiting jargon as much as possible, using the active voice, and being consistent in how you write numbers.
Last, but not least…
Provide your readers with advice or a call-to-action (CTA) that they can act on.
Providing value through write-ups isn’t just about giving reliable and relevant information to your readers.
As a writer, you have to give your target audience a CTA or piece of advice that they actually act on.
For example, if you’re writing for an investment analytics newsletter, it’s not enough to provide readers with stock picks; you also need to tell them why, how, and where they can invest in the stock pick you provided.
Remember: Readers are much more likely to trust and buy into what you’re saying if you can walk them through the course of action you just recommended.
It doesn’t even need to be a full-fledged walkthrough. Sometimes, giving your readers what they need to get started is enough.
