Go short or go long? Sometimes, the latter is the best way to go! Here’s why… [Wednesday: Write with the Pen of the Masters]

In a past “Write with the Pen of the Masters” article, we talked about short form content and its advantages when engaging an audience that’s always on the go.

While we said that in some sense, it would even be reasonable to assume that SHORT content is king, there are instances where you have to craft long-form content for your audience.

That’s why today, we’ll walk you through the nuances of long-form content and help you identify when and how to use it in your writing!

Long and Drawn Out

Long-form content usually covers a topic in greater detail and is meant to educate and inform those who want to know more about a specific subject.

In the context of writing, long-form content is typically composed of more than 1,000 words. This can be blog posts, guides or tutorials, white papers, ebooks, blog posts, and in some cases, articles.

Ultimately, long-form content enables you to educate or inform your audience about a specific topic. It’s also meant to keep interested readers to stay on your website longer.

When executed well, this type of content enables you to establish yourself as an expert on a particular topic.

So, what does long-form content have going for it and… against it?

Advantages

  • Has a better chance of boosting visibility in search engines through keyword rankings
  • Tends to earn more backlinks, leading to improved search engine rankings
  • Stays relevant for a long period of time and is useful for attracting traffic
  • Can be shared on multiple platforms
  • When done right, it can help position you as a thought leader in your industry
  • Can be reworked and split up into short-form content

Disadvantages

  • Time- and labor-intensive to write
  • Requires thorough research
  • Not that mobile-friendly and can impact user experience for mobile users
  • Might overwhelm people who prefer shorter content
  • Doesn’t garner as much engagement when compared to short content

Now that you know the advantages and disadvantages of utilizing long-form content, it’s time for you to know when and when not to use it.

  • Identify what you want to do with your content.

The type of content you’ll create will depend highly on what your goals are.

If you’re looking to build brand awareness, nurture leads, establish yourself as an authority on a particular subject, and position yourself as a thought leader in your industry, long-form content is the way to go.

In cases like the one mentioned above, long-form content is the key because it gives you the ability to explain everything there is to know about your brand and offering.

Remember: Don’t hesitate to leverage the use of short-form content to enhance visibility and reach for your long-form content.

Short-form content is usable in generating attention for long-form content since it is designed to pique the interest of your target audience.

Additionally, you can chop up your long-form content into short-form content, giving you more value for the effort you’ve put in.

  • Take a deep dive into your audience.

Once you’ve set your goals, the next thing you need to do is to understand your target audience’s preferences.

It wouldn’t make sense for you to create short-form content if you’ve found out that your audience prefers longer content. That’s why it’s important for you to understand their preferences in the first place.

Consequently, getting to know your audience means you need to think long and hard about your platform of choice as well.

Platforms such as LinkedIn and Medium work well for long-form content since these don’t restrict users in the number of words they can use per post, making them suitable for content such as whitepapers, essays, or thought leadership pieces.

What about social media platforms such as X (formerly known as Twitter), Instagram, and TikTok?

Those social media platforms work best for short-form content since these platforms encourage this type of content in the first place.

Although that may be the case, you can still use those platforms to generate visibility and reach for your long-form content.

Even though the demand for concise and digestible content has risen, there is still a place for long-form content in today’s digital media landscape.

While short-form content has a higher potential for generating engagement and driving immediate conversions, long-form content is still your best choice if you want to nurture your leads, build brand awareness, and establish your brand as a thought leader in its field.

However, remember that there’s no such thing as a one-size-fits-all strategy.

In some cases, you’ll need to utilize short-form content, especially in instances where you want to generate visibility for your long-form content.

Now that you have everything you need to know about long-form content, it’s time for you to utilize it in your overall content strategy.

Don’t be afraid to try it out!

You never know, this just might be what you need to level up your content!
