A great copy or write-up shouldn’t just capture a reader’s attention and persuade an audience into acting on a particular call-to-action… it has to be easy on the eyes too.
Think about it: All of the words you’ve written mean NOTHING if your copy is a pain in the eyes.
So, if you want to make sure you won’t run into this problem, here are a few tips that will make everything you write look easy on the eyes, easy to understand, and simple to refer to.
-
Shorten your paragraphs.
Readers are less likely to read your content no matter how good it is if it looks like a WALL of text.
So, whenever there’s a long paragraph in your final draft, make sure to break it up into two or more short ones. This way, your readers won’t have a hard time sifting through your write-up or copy.
-
Break up long paragraphs with subheads or numbered, lettered, or bulleted points.
Subheads are an efficient way of breaking up walls of text. They also ensure that your readers won’t lose sight of the arguments and points you’re trying to establish or make.
If you feel like subheads don’t fit with what you’ve written, consider using numbered, lettered, or bulleted points to help your readers follow your thinking.
Bullets not only break up walls of text, but also provide emphasis on key ideas presented in your write-up or copy.
-
Use typographic devices for clarity and emphasis.
If you want to stress a particular point in your write-up, don’t hesitate to use italics for emphasis.
Should you choose to underline a specific line of text, make sure to use a single continuous underline instead of a choppy-looking one, where one word is highlighted at a time.
-
Be consistent with how you write numbers.
Publications both online and in print differ in how they spell out numbers. Regardless of which guideline you follow, make sure to stay consistent.
It’ll be easier for your readers when you spell out amounts like USD 40 million consistently in your write-up rather than alternating it with something like $40,000,000.
-
Use photos as breakers for text.
Consider adding an image between paragraphs to give your readers something else to look at.
Even if points 1 to 4 have been followed, there is still a chance that readers will get eye fatigue from all the text they’ve read, leading them to stop reading your work altogether.
Providing readers with a visual aid like an image related to your write-up’s topic will help them get a short break and give them renewed focus on your write-up.
There you have it—the tips you need to keep in mind to make your copy or write-up easy on the eyes!
Always remember that no matter how good, persuasive, and attractive your writing is, your readers could still end up ignoring what you wrote if your write-up isn’t easy to read.
That’s why it’s important to thoroughly check how you formatted your copy—this will determine whether you get conversions or not.
This may take additional editing time, but it’s a worthwhile step that will lead you to write better drafts!
